What is a P.O.W.E.R. tool?
A power tool is special practice, strategy or resource that improves one or more of the following aspects of professional life:
Purpose: A power tool may help improve our sense of purpose by providing motivation or a more in-depth understanding of why we do certain things
Opportunity: A power tool may help us find and take advantage of opportunity that would normally go unnoticed
Workmanship: A power tool may help develop skills that will improve our ability to perform the tasks of our jobs
Effectiveness: A power tool may help us become more successful by increasing the impact of the work we do
Results: A power tool may help us achieve more desirable results
What is the weekly series about?
Every week E.A. Tool Box will introduce one P.O.W.E.R. Tool. We will evaluate its use and discuss how we can integrate it into our daily practices.
For now, I am asking everyone to send me one of their ideas of a P.O.W.E.R. tool. What keeps you going strong or gives you an added boost? What little tricks make all the difference in your day? If you were showing someone how to do your job, what would be the one essential tip you’d give them? Be creative – it can be anything!
E-mail me your P.O.W.E.R. Tool today. And keep your eye out for the weekly series, starting next Wednesday.
And remember to subscribe to my feed in a reader or subscribe by email so you don’t miss out.

Hello,
I tried e mailing you; however, I kept getting an undeliverable message. I really enjoy your blog; I linked to it from Dumb Little Man. I have a few P.O.W.E.R. Tools that I use. The most powerful tool that I have; however, is I pray everyday before work. I pray that God will give me wisdom and patience. I find that the days that I don’t pray before work I have a hard time dealing with people and doing my job effectively. I don’t know if this is what you’re looking for, but this is what I consider the most powerful P.O.W.E.R. Tool. Thank you for your blog I look for to receiving them.
For His Glory,
Ray

Thanks Ray for the comment! I just tested the email and it seems to be working fine – if others find that they are having problems too, please let me know. I’m not a techie so errors pop up all the time. Bring on the POWER tools, guys!

One power tool that I find I use all of the time is the autocorrect function (both in Word and in WordPerfect). Not only have I customized the list to automatically correct my most common typing mistakes, but also use it to shorten the time I spend typing out repetitive phrases. As only one example, typing “usdcc” autocorrects to “United States District Court”. I use it for client’s names, for Federal (“frcpp”) and Texas (“trcpp”) Rules of Civil Procedure (I work in Dallas), the names of various Acts we refer to a lot, and so on. So long as the “shortcut” you type in is not a real word or abbreviation, this power tool can save you hours of typing in a year’s time.
